"NEW in 2026, TCDA introduces a Community Christmas Tree Lighting and celebration at the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park." That line comes from the Tahoe City Downtown Association's event page. It puts the town's new holiday kickoff on the same day the park opens for the season, Saturday, Nov. 28.
The location matters. Tahoe City has plenty of places that could hold a tree lighting. The Winter Sports Park makes sense because its rink has opened on schedule two Novembers running, while the snow-dependent parts of the park have not. The town is planning its December around the most reliable piece of winter it has.
Why the Rink Gets Opening Night
Last November showed the pattern clearly. In the Tahoe City Public Utility District's November 2025 operations report, the park opened Nov. 29, 2025. The rink operated, but the report notes "no sled hill or trails due to lack of snow."
Here is how November compared year over year in that report:
| November activity at the Winter Sports Park | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Opening date | Nov. 30 | Nov. 29 |
| Days open in November | 1 | 2 |
| Day-use reservations | 114 | 217 |
| Ice skate rentals | 38 | 99 |
| Season passes sold | 77 | 67 |
| Sled hill and ski trail use | none | none |
At first glance, day use nearly doubled. Almost all of that jump came from the extra day on the calendar, though. Divided by days open, it works out to about 109 reservations a day in 2025 against 114 in 2024. Skate rentals were the real change, rising from 38 to 99. More of last November's skaters were showing up without their own skates. In both years, the sled hill and ski trails logged zero November use.
The rink has a history of opening in bad weather. When it debuted in December 2016, the Sierra Sun reported that the grand opening went ahead in the rain, with crews squeegeeing water off the ice. The paper described it as a 50-by-80-foot portable rink purchased from Ice America. Ten years later, that same sheet of ice is hosting the town's new holiday celebration.
Opening Day Is Also Small Business Saturday
Nov. 28 already had a job before the tree lighting arrived. TCDA bills it as Small Business Saturday, with promotions, pop-ups and specials across Tahoe City, the West Shore and Alpine Meadows. The new celebration at the park adds:
- Santa, at the park on opening day
- The Tahoe Lake Elementary School Choir
- The Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus
- Sponsors: North Tahoe Chamber, TCDA, TCPUD, Tahoe Tree Company and Starlight Enterprises
TCDA lists the details as "TBA" as of its October posting. The start time and program for the lighting haven't been published yet. Businesses that want to take part in the Small Business Saturday promotions can contact Pam at TCDA, at [email protected].
December Belongs to the Leagues on Weeknights
After opening weekend, the rink's weeknights shift toward organized programs. Anyone who plans to skate on a weekday evening should know this before booking a slot.
TCPUD's adult curling leagues run on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Tuesday play runs from Dec. 1, 2026, through Feb. 9, 2027, and Wednesday play from Dec. 2, 2026, through Feb. 10, 2027. A tournament follows on Feb. 16 and 17. Team registration is $250. The youth hockey league for grades 3 through 6 plays Jan. 5 through Feb. 18, 2027, with playoffs Feb. 23 to 25, weather and rink conditions permitting. Games run Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 6:15 p.m. League fees are $120 for residents and $132 for nonresidents. An optional helmet, pad and skate rental costs $30, and sticks are provided.
These programs cut into public skating. Under last season's posted schedule, public skate on Monday through Thursday ran 2 to 8 p.m., but only 2 to 3:30 p.m. on youth hockey and adult curling days. The rink was closed to public skating while those programs were on the ice. TCPUD's hours page still shows the 2025-26 schedule, so this winter's exact hours haven't been posted yet. With leagues back on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings starting Dec. 1, though, expect the same pattern.
Weekends are when the rink is open longest. Under last season's schedule, the rink was open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, except Christmas Day, when it opened at 2 p.m. Starting Feb. 27, 2026, it switched to 2 to 8 p.m. every day. Skating was sold in 1.5-hour time slots, and TCPUD recommended advance reservations for peak weekend and holiday times because walk-up space was limited. The TCPUD reservation catalog is where those slots go on sale once the park opens.
One Saturday morning in December is free. TCPUD's Breakfast with Santa is on Dec. 5, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with food and ice skating. It's run in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Tahoe City, the Kiwanis Club of North Lake Tahoe and SnowFest!.
Three Friday Evenings Downtown, With a Ride In
The rink kicks off the season, but most of December happens downtown. TCDA's 2026 calendar lists Holly Jolly Strolls on Fridays, Dec. 4, 11 and 18. The listing promises extended shopping hours, entertainment, special offers, free gift wrapping, live music and caroling, Santa visits, seasonal menus and pop-ups, and workshops. Specific times and participating businesses are still marked "Details TBA."
All three nights are on the route for the free Tahoe City event shuttle. The program is managed by the Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, TCDA and Palisades Tahoe, and funded through TOT-TBID. It runs two routes.
- Olympic Valley shuttle: free parking at Palisades, with stops at Everline, River Ranch and the TART Olympic Valley stops.
- West Shore shuttle: stops at Granlibakken, Sunnyside, Homewood and Tahoma.
The same shuttle program returns for 2nd Fridays on Jan. 8, Feb. 12, March 12 and April 9, 2027. The shuttle program runs through April 9, 2027, and schedules for each event are posted closer to the date at tahoetruckeetransit.com/parkandride.
Dates to Set Before Nov. 28
Registration opens more than three weeks before the rink does:
- Wednesday, Nov. 4, at noon: TCPUD fall and winter program registration opens. Youth hockey gear rentals are limited, according to TCPUD's league page.
- Saturday, Nov. 28: The Winter Sports Park opens, with Small Business Saturday and the new Community Christmas Tree Lighting.
- Tuesday, Dec. 1, and Wednesday, Dec. 2: Adult curling leagues begin, and weeknight public skate gets shorter.
- Friday, Dec. 4: The first Holly Jolly Stroll, with the free shuttle running.
- Saturday, Dec. 5: Breakfast with Santa at the rink, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Fridays, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18: The second and third Holly Jolly Strolls.
The sled hill and the snowshoe and cross-country trails at the Winter Sports Park will open when the snow allows. Last November they didn't open at all, while the rink did.
