Every October, on a Saturday morning that IVGID never quite pins to the same date twice, Ski Beach fills with dogs, peanut butter jars, and a dock-diving competition. Last year it landed on October 18. The event is called Puppy Plunge, and it exists because of something most residents get backward: the same day the district closes its beaches for the season is the day it opens Ski Beach to dogs. Closure, here, is not an ending. It is a handoff.
That single fact reframes the whole month. Incline Village does not wind down in October so much as it executes a scheduled turnover, one with fixed dates, named venues, and its own small rituals. If you have lived here a while, you already sense the shift. What is less obvious is how deliberately it is staged, and how far in advance the district and the chamber lay the calendar for it.
The Last Thursday at Diamond Peak
Start with the market. The Incline Village Farmers Market, run by Lake Tahoe Markets, moved to a new home at Diamond Peak this year, and its final Thursday of the 2026 season falls on September 3, four days from now if you are reading this at the end of August. Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. have carried the market since May 21. After Labor Day week, the tents come down and do not return until next spring.
That closing date matters more than it looks. It is the first domino in a sequence that runs through late October, and it is easy to miss if your mental calendar still has the market running into the fall the way farmers markets do in warmer climates. The Grille's Last Call
The Chateau Grille, the restaurant on the Championship Golf Course, only operates during golf season, which runs mid-May through mid-October. This year brought two changes worth knowing if you have a standing Sunday habit: brunch specials now run every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and IVGID Picture Pass holders get 20 percent off food and nonalcoholic drinks during the daily 4 to 6 p.m. happy hour, up from the standard 10 percent discount pass holders get at other IVGID food venues. Both are new for 2026. Both disappear the day the course closes.
If The Grille has become a fixture of your week, mid-October is the deadline, not a soft suggestion. There is no indoor off-season version. When golf season ends, so does the kitchen.
October 15, Give or Take
This is the date that actually reorganizes the town, more than any single event does. IVGID's own beach pages state that the district's beaches close for the season typically from October 15 through April 15. For seven months, swimming and the beach-day version of Incline Village goes away.
But the same closure is what triggers dog access. Dogs are only allowed on Ski Beach, west of the boat ramp, after the seasonal closure begins, and only when accompanied by an owner holding beach access. For the nine months the beaches are open to swimmers, most dogs are watching from the parking lot or walking the Lakeshore path instead. For the other months, Ski Beach becomes theirs.
Puppy Plunge, hosted with Pet Network Humane Society and the Tahoe-Incline Rotary, marks that flip with a dock-diving contest and a peanut butter jar as the price of entry. It is not a consolation event tacked onto a quiet month. It is the town noticing that its calendar has a hinge, and building a party around the hinge instead of ignoring it.

Two Parties Bracket the Same Week
The chamber and the district do not leave the changeover to speak for itself. Nineteen days separate them. In between sits the beach closure and the Grille's last week of service. Look at the sequence as a whole and it stops reading like three unrelated line items on a community calendar. It reads like a town that opens its fall season with one gathering, changes its infrastructure in the middle, and closes the season with another gathering, all inside a three-week span that most people experience as scattered errands rather than a single coordinated turn.
What Never Actually Stops
Not everything on the list follows the calendar. Geese Patrol, the district's canine-powered response to geese overstaying their welcome on beach turf, runs on an as-needed basis rather than a seasonal one, a small reminder that some parts of daily life here answer to wildlife, not the calendar.
That is worth sitting with, because it is the same lesson the whole month teaches. Incline Village's fall is not one long fade from busy to empty. It is a set of specific, dated handoffs, mostly written down on IVGID's own site if you know to look, and mostly invisible if you are going by feel. The market has a last Thursday. The Grille has a last Sunday. The beaches have a last swim day that is also a first dog day. The town marks the whole thing with a party at the start and a party at the end.
